Grolsch (part of Asahi Europe & International) and Gulpener have announced that Grolsch will increase its stake in Gulpener from 15% to full ownership. This marks the next step in nearly 30 years of collaboration and signals the start of a new phase for both brewers in the Netherlands.
This step strengthens Grolsch’s position in the Dutch beer market and enhances the capabilities of both brewers in an increasingly competitive market. For Grolsch, the acquisition means a stronger position in the specialty beer segment and in non-alcoholic beverages, with brands including Gulpener, Château Neubourg, Gerardus Kloosterbier, Korenwolf and BATU Kombucha.
At the same time, the shared principle remains clear: the unique character, quality and local roots of Gulpener will be preserved. Continuity and recognizability are the starting points, with room to jointly explore further development in the longer term.
Emily Pittman, Managing Director of Grolsch commented: “This step is a logical continuation of a partnership that has already proven itself in practice for nearly 30 years. Gulpener is a distinctive brewery with a great history and a strong identity. With this step, we strengthen our position in the beer market, while enabling Gulpener’s character, quality and local strength to continue to grow.”
Jan-Paul Rutten, owner and director of Gulpener: “For Gulpener, this marks a new chapter in a long-standing partnership built on trust. We see this step as confirmation of the strength of our brands, our people, our quality and our roots in Limburg. Over recent decades, Gulpener has developed very positively into the sustainable, local specialty brewer it is today. However, in order to remain successful in a challenging market, scale and commercial strength are essential. In Grolsch, we have found the best partner to secure a healthy future for the brewery and its employees.”
With today’s announcement, Grolsch and Gulpener signal an important change for both brewers, with greater strength for the future. Grolsch and Gulpener share not only a passion for great beer, but also the ambition to contribute to a more sustainable world. Together, the brewers bring over 600 years of brewing experience.
